NCAA Championship Basketball
You will first come to an introduction slide which gives you valuable
information about the demo disk. It is imperative that you read this
introduction to get a good understanding of how NCAA Championship
Basketball is played.
Next you will see a screen which tells you about the key features in the
actual game which ships October 1996. These have been highlighted for
you since some of these features are disabled in the demo version which
you have.
Welcome to the NCAA Championship Basketball Interactive Demo.
We recommend you read this file before installing and running the game.
INTRODUCTION
Important information for obtaining success....
You are about to take on the most realistic college basketball game
available on the market. There are a few things you will need to know
before you jump into this game if you want to make it to the Final Four.
NCAA Championship Basketball features a sophisticated artificial intelligence
which has the ability to determine players actions and reactions based not
only on skill, but also on proximity to the basket, the ball handler or
the defensive man. This allows for player ratings to change through four
years of play.
Unlike any other sports game currently available, NCAA Championship
Basketball requires that the gamer pay close attention to individual player
ratings with regards to specific skills. For example, a player with a low
rating in shooting will not be the player you want to pass the ball to in
the final seconds of a close game. In order to take the team to the Final
Four, it will be imperative that you pay close attention to individual
player ratings with regards to specific skills.
NCAA Championship Basketball offers you a challenging five-on-five basketball
game that will allow for hours of exciting play. We believe that you will
find this to be the ultimate college basketball game ever developed, and
invite your comments. Contact our web site at:

Play the Game
The Tip Off
Each game begins with a Tip-Off. At the toss, press jump to go for the
ball. Your success depends on the skill and experience of your center
compared to the opposition's center. Remember to consult player ratings.
The Game Screen
The Controlled man during gameplay has a circle at his feet displaying
his jersey number and position. If CPU Shot Assist is turned ON, the best
choice to receive a pass displays a red circle at his feet.
The Rotating Camera tracks the action to give you maximum view of the
court and players throughout gameplay.
Time
There are 3 clocks to keep an eye on during gameplay.
The Game Clock: Displays the time remaining in the half, while an LED
indicator displays first or second half. The game clock display sits in
the upper right corner of the screen during play, or at the bottom of the
screen during time outs and pauses. You set the time of each half on the
Options screen prior to beginning game play.
The Shot Clock: Displays time allowed for the offense to make a field goal
attempt. If the offense holds the ball for 35 seconds without striking the
rim or making a basket, the result is a turnover.
The Time Out Clock: Displays the time remaining time to make substitutions
or strategy choices.
Offense
Ballhandling
The player in possession of the ball will dribble whether he is moving on
the court or standing still. If he begins to make a pass or take a shot at
the basket, he'll stop dribbling. If he lands on the court holding the ball
after taking a jump shot, the referee will call traveling.
Make a Pass
Make a pass by pointing the joystick or direction keys at a player tapping
Button A without using the joystick or Direction keys.
NOTE: When CPU Pass Assist is selected, the computer may override your choice
and force the pass to a player it has selected.
Take a Shot
Your players shooting style varies depending on their individual skills.
A player close to the glass may go for a slam or lay-up. If he's out a
little farther he might try a hook shot. A good outside shooter will try a
jump shot or go for a 3-pointer.
To take a shot:
Press and Hold Button B. Release Button B to follow through.
NOTE: Ball releases when Button is released
Improve your chances of making a jump shot by releasing the ball right
at the top of the jump.
Pump-fake an opponent by tapping Button B.
Try to stay clear of defenders. Even if your shot is not blocked, the
defender's harassment seriously effects shot accuracy.
Defense
Block a Shot or Rebound
Tap Button B to block a shot or take a rebound near the hoop.
Switch Defenders
Switch to the defender closest to the ball by tapping Button A while
keeping the joystick centered or not pressing any direction keys.
Steal the Ball
Attempt a steal by getting in front of the ball carrier. Press and
hold Button B.
Note: Get too aggressive and you're likely to draw the referee's whistle.
Fouls & Free Throws
Fouls Resulting in Free Throws
If a shooter gets fouled during a field goal attempt and scores anyway,
he gets one free throw.
If shooter gets fouled and misses the shot, he gets two free throws or
three if he was attempting a 3-pointer.
After a team commits its seventh team foul in one half, the other team
goes into a bonus situation. That seventh foul, if normally a non-shooting
foul, now becomes a 1-for-1 free throw. The tenth foul and beyond is a
double bonus. From this point on, all fouls result in two free throws.
Shooting Free Throws
When a player is fouled he will line up on the Free Throw Line and take
possession of the ball.
1. Press and hold Button B to begin the shot. A floating basketball cursor
will begin moving around the basket.
2. When the cursor lines up with the hoop, release Button B to make the
free throw.
NOTE: The cursor speed varies based on the shooter's free throw ability.

throw-ins, free throws, or a dead ball. The Line-ups Screen also displays
prior to the beginning of the game for initial team assignments and
strategy decisions. You can also check game stats for both your team
and your opponent. This is vital information for finding out how specific
players are stacking up against each other.
Note: In a two-player game, both players must FAST FORWARD to clear the
Line-Ups Screen prior to starting a game. In a one-player game the computer

and one 20 second time out per half (an unused 20 second time out in one
half cannot be used in the second half).
When all of your Time Outs are used up, the Time Out Buttons will be grayed
out and display the number zero. You will not be able to select them.
Watch the clock in the upper left corner of the screen to keep track of
time. REWIND quickly back to the court after you make your Time Out
decisions. If you cannot make your changes within the allowed time, the
game resumes without the changes you attempted to make.
In a Two-Player game, both players must REWIND to clear the Line-Ups Screen
before the game begins.
Send in a Substitution
You should make a substitution when a player is fatigued or injured. If a
player fouls out of the game, you will be required to make a sub.

ejection. You will be prompted to press any key. The Line-Ups Screen require
you to send in a substitution for the ejected player.

possible.
NOTE: If you leave an injured player in the game, his performance will be
so poor, gameplay for the whole team could suffer.

Recruiting Talent
You do recruiting when:
You select NEW SEASON. Instead of beginning with gameplay, you recruit new
players from the top high school seniors in the country.
This is where you put your coaching skills in high gear. It's a brand new
season or you just battled your way through the first season.
Too bad...your point guard, the best player on the team took his diploma
and turned pro. Time to scope out the talent pool. Make 15 recruiting
attempts from a group of 300 hot high school heroes all dying to play
college ball. But they want the best school and have a list of priorities.
Some of them are so good everyone wants them. Others have a favorite school
and yours may not be it. Still others get homesick and want to play with a
local school. You can take two recruiting approaches. Go for the sure bet
and the odds are in your favor, or take a gamble. A long shot player with
marginal interest could end up choosing your team if you work to get him.
There are 3 criteria to guide your recruiting effort:
Position
You must have 2 players of each position on your team at all times. In a
recruiting situation, the computer will force you to select a replacement
for a specific needed position by eliminating your alternatives.
For Example: Of your 12 man team, you have three graduating seniors,
including both of your point guards and one of three centers. You now have
three open slots to fill. Since you have two centers remaining, you can
recruit any position for the first slot. However, since you have lost
point guards, you must recruit two new point guards.
Location
Every player looks close to home. You have a better chance of recruiting
local players than distant ones. If you find a top player who lives close,
you have an excellent chance of getting him.
Ranking
Go for a highly ranked player of any position when you can.
Review and Recruit a Player on the Recruit Screens
1.If you want to recruit new players:
Select EVENT; NEW SEASON on the Pre-Game Screen and FAST FORWARD.
2.When the Team Select Screen displays, make your team selection and FAST
FORWARD. Wait a moment for the computer to seek out the top 300 high
school seniors in the country and display the Recruiting Screen.
3. On the Recruit Screen, use the slider at the left side of the screen
to scroll through the list of all the hopefuls.
Select SORT and toggle to view the players by location, ranking, or position.
Select RATINGS and toggle to display Offensive, Defensive and Miscellaneous
Stats.
Select ROSTER to make comparisons to your present team.
Highlight a promising player.
4. Select REVIEW to help you make the final recruiting decisions about a
player and then actually make your bid for him if he seems promising.
Check out his ranking, home state and physical attributes.
Study his priorities and favorite schools.
Type-Select TYPE to set the strength of your recruiting effort.
Toggle to:
Light-If you want the guy but can live without him.
Normal-If you think he'll be a great addition to the team.
Heavy-If you think this player could take you to the championship.
You are allowed 5 recruiting rounds at each strength. The
number under the Type button indicates how many
recruit efforts you have remaining.
5. Select RECRUIT. Wait to see if the recruiting effort is successful.
NOTE: Sometimes the player you are after will not make a decision right
away. You may have to make multiple recruiting attempts to get your man.
Sometimes, every effort to recruit him will fail.
NOTE: The school that was successful in landing the recruit will appear in
the Signed By Notice on the Review window if no Signed By Noticed appears,
the player is undecided.
6. FAST FORWARD to display the Recruit List and repeat the process for
another player. Players that are unavailable will be crossed out.
Note: If you want the computer to finish your recruiting chores for you,
FAST FORWARD from the Recruit List and Respond with a 'Yes' when asked if
you want the CPU to finish your recruiting. Press any key when prompted to
return to your Team Screen.
7. Fast forward to your Team Screen when the Recruiting session is over.
Select SEASON and toggle to CURRENT to view you new team which includes
new recruits.
